The Greater Des Moines SoapBox Derby Association is dedicated to helping children become solid community citizens through the teaching of basic construction skills, teamwork, the spirit of competition, perseverance and family values.
Races are held at the permanent track located in Ewing Park in Southeast Des Moines, Iowa. Racing begins around 8:30 a.m. and goes until approximately 3:30 p.m.
Boys and girls compete driving gravity-powered cars in one of three divisions: 1.) the Stock division is made up of lean-forward cars good for beginning drivers, 2.) the Super Stock division is also lean-forward cars good for beginning drivers, but gives the competitors an opportunity to expand their knowledge by building a more advanced model, 3.) the Masters division is a lay-down car in which experienced racers may use their creativity and design skills to customize their car.
The events are free to the public, and a concession stand is normally available.
